Set in a vibrant downtown entertainment complex, this sophisticated and artsy high-rise hotel is a great location to explore this trendy spot in Norfolk, Virginia.
Hilton The Main is just over 1 year old, the newest hotel in downtown Norfolk. LTD had the opportunity to stay at The Main for a midweek getaway.
1. Location
The location of The Main is outstanding. At less than 20 minutes from ORF but situated in a thriving hip downtown area close to museums and the waterfront make this an optimal base for exploring the Virginia Beach area. Within easy walking distance are the Cannonball trail, the Chrysler Art Museum, the battleship Wisconsin and the Nauticus naval museum.
2. Rooms
The views from the rooms which start on the 10th floor are fabulous. Norfolk not only has the waterfront and the battleship Wisconsin, but amazing architecture. We had a riverfront view from the 16th floor but even if we were facing the city there would be interesting vistas. The decor was typical Hilton with ample space, outlets, drawers, closets and in room tea and coffee. Crabtree and Evelyn products are included, but bathrobes are not. Lightning is adequate for these aging eyes, but noticeably absent was a magnifying mirror. Housekeeping was not up to standards with many stray hairs noticeable all over the bathroom floor and along tub edges. Lastly, what new Hilton, or should we say hotel still have shower curtains?? Not only did we have a shower curtain, but we had a shower curtain that was about 2-3 inches too long dragging on the bottom of the tub! It is not surprising that the shower curtain had mildew along the bottom edge and who knows what else?
For your flight to Virginia and while touring, get a funky pair of compression socks. They look great and make your legs feel great at the end of the day. Click the photo below to learn more and buy from Amazon!
3. Breakfast
Of course as an American Express Platinum cardholder HiltonHonors Gold status is complimentary and this will include breakfast buffet at Hilton hotels or additional Honors points. Breakfast was average with fresh fruit, yogurts, breads and cereals (hot and cold), and strong coffee! We didn't partake in hot buffet but it was available. Service at the buffet was virtually nonexistent but the staff was pleasant.
4. Fitness center
Great views are available from the treadmills with fresh towels and bottles of water at each machine. Nice touch not typical of Hilton. The pool is located on the same floor indoors with comfortable seating arrangements and a large outdoor area to view the waterfront. A game room with a pool table and other table games was located there as well. A rooftop beer garden and restaurant is on the same fifth floor.
6. Front desk. The staff was exceptionally nice and helpful. They went above and beyond to make our stay worthwhile after we had some reservation issues. The entire Hotel is beautiful with an artistic flare reflecting the hip vibe of downtown Norfolk.
Bottom line:
We recommend a try of Hilton, The Main in Norfolk. The hotel is well-situated, with many great views, amenities and friendly staff. The biggest deficit is housekeeping for our room and the lack of a shower door! Even is a shower curtain is chosen for decor it should fit the tub and be changed with every customer for sanitation!
